I completed this picture yesterday. It is painted with acrylic on handmade paper originating from a soymilk carton. The frame is also handmade from cardboard boxes covered with layers of papers.

The theme of this artwork is Hoshi Matsuri, the annual Buddhist fire ceremony held annually on February 11th. Though I am not a member of Agon Buddhist congregation, I chose to participate by writing my wishes on prayer wood sticks, which were thrown by disciples into the fire during the ceremony.

I used left over brochures from the ceremony for creating the flame, and I applied a washi onto the paper in its final layers. I enjoy the process of this Paper Mache like approach because it is like an active meditation.

I have been working with found and recycled materials for many years. Most recently, I am focusing on paintings, which incorporate my handmade paper.

My work, Training Pants: Laundry, was selected for the Fine Art Exhibition of the Decatur Arts Festival. I am very happy!!

The exhibition will be held in The Delton Gallery on the campus of Agnes Scott College form Wednesday, May 21, through Sunday, June 1.

Fukubukuro: a grab bag

I created Japanese Fukubukuro from food packages.
Fuku means fortune and bukuro means bag.

A Fukubukuro is a bag containig with unknown merchandise that goes on sale day after New Year’s Day in Japan.

It was not so easy to toss baby food jars away into the trash can, so I created something festive.

Greeting Card

These are two examples of my greeting cards of this year. I used a left over linoleum block to print my daughter’s face. Hand print is of course, my daughter’s.

I cut magazine clips and stiched paper together, and made a pocket with rice paper (also left over form shoji paper), then stamped Japanese symbols mean wishing a happy new year.

I cut a 3 strips of paper stack in the pocket.

“Make a wish dreams come true.”
“Continuing the journey, 2008”
“Ecology of mind, Real love”

Each paper strips are my image of Gomagi, a player’s wooden stick.
People write their wishes on Gomagi and the monks bless Gomagi and toss them into the flames in the Buddhist fire ceremony.

I created my greeting cards from things that I found in my house. I didn’t spend anything but envelopes and stamps.

The Path of God

Recently, I have been enjoying painting from photographs that my friends are taken in Japan. I prefer capturing realities and likeness from direct observations; however, using snapshots as references in this case is quit interesting and I am into it.

Photographs that I am chosen are just snapshots and nothing fancy, but capturing moments and moods of ordinary scenes of Japan are evocative. I feel like traveling through beyond an actual distance and time to return to my homeland where I grew up.

This piece is painted on a hand-made recycled paper made from milk cartons. Size is very small (6” x 4”). It calls The Path of God, depicts a small shrine in Onda-Cho, Yokohama City, approximately 20 miles form downtown Tokyo.

My friend Fujinosuke took this picture while riding his mountain bike. He lives near by and these areas are still remained of rich in nature. The name of Shrine is unknown. It has a name but we do not know it's pronounciation.

While I am painting this piece, I felt something floating in the space. Fujinosuke explained that the path between Torii and the shrine is Kami-sama’s path. He said, “Don’t walking center of the path when passing under Torii."

I am learning more about Japanese customs and traditions after coming to the United States and I am willing to know more about them.

This painting is still in progress.
This is my Japanese friend Fujinosuke's bike which was stolen in April. Someone cut his wire lock and sold it to a bicycle shop. The shop owner felt suspicious about this person and checked bike’s registration number and security number that were not matched. The shop owner called police and Fujinosuke's bike was found last month. He was very happy!! Though his bike is still at the police station, he can’t wait riding his blue Dakota.
